On March 8, APA expressed its support for the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 (H.R. 8 / S.529) in a letter to congressional leadership (PDF, 125KB). This legislation, which passed the House of Representatives on March 11, is an important step forward in addressing our nation’s gun violence public health crisis by closing preexisting loopholes that allow unlicensed gun sellers to avoid comprehensive background checks on firearms sales. The bill is a longstanding priority in APA’s advocacy efforts to promote evidence-based strategies to prevent gun violence tragedies. APA will continue its advocacy in the U.S. Senate to seek final passage of the legislation.
