APA sent a letter of support to the lead sponsors of both the House (PDF, 177KB) and Senate (PDF, 179KB) versions of the Dream Act, H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act and S. 264, the Dream Act of 2021. Both bills help hardworking, young immigrants who have already demonstrated their strong work ethic and potential to be able to remain in the United States.
In both letters, APA illustrated how psychological research supports this legislation, which would help alleviate stress experienced by immigrants by eliminating their fear of deportation. APA also supports legislation that helps keep families together. Although Dreamers are primarily young adults, APA explained that if this legislation is not passed, these immigrants could face separation from their parents or from their young children who are U.S. citizens. There is also evidence of Dreamers’ high level of engagement in society. The letters explained that Dreamers can be expected to continue to contribute positively to society, given their passion and desire to stay in the United States.
The House passed the bill on March 18, 2021. Attention now turns to the Senate and APA will continue to press for action on this this legislation.
