Psychologists who are wondering if they will be required to report under Medicare’s Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) in 2019 now have a way to verify their status. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have set up a websiteopens in new window where providers, using their National Provider Identification numbers, can check their reporting status under MIPS.

Psychologists were added to MIPS for the first time starting on Jan. 1, 2019, but many psychologists are expected to be exempt from MIPS reporting under the low-volume threshold (LVT). The LVT exempts providers who in 2018 met at least one of the following three criteria:

  • Treated 200 or fewer Medicare Part B beneficiaries.
  • Billed Medicare for $90,000 or less in allowed charges.
  • Provided 200 or fewer Medicare Part B covered services.
