APA Services joined 171 health services research and primary care researchers in a letter of support (PDF, 113KB)opens in new window of a $500 million investment in fiscal year 2025 (FY25) for the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ).
The Friends of AHRQ coalition, of which APA is a member, organized the letter to emphasize the agency’s support of “research to improve health care quality, reduce costs, advance patient safety, decrease medical errors, and broaden access to essential services.” The letter also highlighted AHRQ’s role as the lead federal agency funding health services research and primary care research and pointed to the valuable insights into the health care system that the agency provides. The coalition stressed the need for additional investments in AHRQ to “maximize the translation of research findings across the public health and health care continuum to improve patient care and keep pace with the rapidly evolving changing health care landscape.”
President Biden’s FY25 budget request for AHRQ calls for $387.3 million, an increase of $13.8 million or 3.7% above the FY23 funding level. The current FY24 funding level is $369 million, a $4.5 million reduction below FY23, reflecting a renewed bipartisan understanding of primary care and health services research. The House had proposed eliminating the agency in FY24.
