APA Services joined 559 members of the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research in endorsing a statement recommending at least $51.303 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2027 (PDF, 252KB)opens in new window. The community also expressed its gratitude for the “longstanding bipartisan support for NIH.”
The coalition asserts that the boost is essential for sustaining scientific progress, strengthening the nation’s health infrastructure, and accelerating breakthroughs that millions of patients depend on. “Patients across the country—from urban centers to rural communities—benefit from medical research supported by the NIH, which serves as the foundation for nearly every preventive intervention, diagnostic, treatment, and cure in practice today.”
The group’s statement emphasizes that the NIH stakeholder community is committed to producing high-quality science that earns public trust and strengthens research capacity nationwide. Sustained, predictable NIH funding, a fully staffed agency, and policies that avoid sharp drops in funded proposals are essential to this work. Federal investment in the NIH drives collaboration across states, stretching each taxpayer's dollar and mobilizing talent in ways that state- or industry-systems alone cannot match. Federal leadership must remain steadfast to ensure lifesaving scientific progress continues.
APA Services will continue to advocate for behavioral and psychological research. To this end, on February 19, 2026, APA Services energized Washington, DC, for psychology, with its third annual Council Hill Day, bringing 185 APA members and staff from 46 states and territories to Capitol Hill. Advocates fanned out across congressional offices, making a strong, coordinated push for increased funding for the NIH.
