At an April 28 subcommittee hearing in the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, APA provided a statement for the record (PDF, 244KB) and a fact sheet regarding the association’s support for Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) (PDF, 67KB). ERPOs are state laws that provide communities and law enforcement with an opportunity to petition the courts to intervene and temporarily remove a firearm from an individual who is a possible risk to themselves or others without legal repercussions. APA’s statement of support noted emerging scientific evidence that these laws can be effective interventions to prevent suicides.
