APA Services joined the Friends of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (127KB)opens in new window urging Congress to provide at least $900 million in funding for IES in fiscal year 2025. The requested funding level, which would provide a significant investment in education research and development infrastructure, would expand the agency’s capacity to advance innovative research, support dependable statistics, and develop the methodological skills of education researchers. An increase in funding would specifically increase the support available for psychological research, including research focused on social-emotion, contextual, and biological factors that influence learning and development.

IES is an independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education. The agency supports high-quality research and develops partnerships between researchers and practitioners to inform education policy and practice. IES also supports the examination of state and local education policies and uses the findings to support other states and districts. The agency’s research, development, and dissemination program supports research and development grants addressing persistent questions in education policy and practice. The program is the primary funding source for basic and applied education research to develop the methodological skills of the education research workforce.

The Friends of IES is a coalition of 44 organizations committed to supporting the essential role of the Institute of Education Sciences in improving the nation’s educational outcomes.
