On June 13, 2023, APA Services joined 114 nonprofit organizations in a letter (PDF, 83KB)opens in new window to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Ranking Member Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) affirming support for President Biden’s nomination of Monica Bertagnolli, MDopens in new window, as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Bertagnolli is currently serving as the director of the National Cancer Institute. Before coming to NIH, she served as the Richard E. Wilson Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and as a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She was also a member of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Treatment and Sarcoma Centers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The organizations further urged the rapid confirmation of Bertagnolli, a leading scientist, clinical trialist, physician, surgeon, and a breast cancer patient herself, and emphasized that she would bring the experience and leadership necessary to guide NIH into the future and to accelerate discovery. APA Services supports her confirmation so that the “United States remains the world’s preeminent biomedical, behavioral, and social science research power.” If confirmed, Bertagnolli will replace current Acting Director Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD, who has been leading NIH since the retirement of Francis Collins, MD, PhD, in 2021.
