APA filed comments to ensure that the doctrine of psychology is adequately represented in the updated National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, calling for increased investments in research around artificial intelligence (AI), further integration of ethics in AI platforms and policies, and a deeper examination of the implicit biases present in AI systems. There is an imperative that as the technologies grow in their capabilities and prevalence, that research surrounding their impact also increases. Without the help of psychological science, we risk harming already disadvantaged populations and creating systems that perpetuate harmful stereotypes and bias.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy, on behalf of the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC) Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, the NSTC Machine Learning and AI Subcommittee, the National AI Initiative Office, and the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development National Coordination Office, published the request for input from interested parties on their planned update to the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan (PDF, 1.07MB)opens in new window.
