On December 5, APA Services filed comments (PDF, 249KB)opens in new window in response to a White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) request to informopens in new window national priorities for the governance, use, and research of the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI). OMB sought responses to eight questions related to the way the U.S. federal government might regulate, use, and further research AI.
The association’s comments provided examples of how psychologists who study human intelligence are unlocking ways to enhance AI and to ensure its ethical and appropriate use, and encouraged the government to do more to collaborate with APA Services and the broader field of psychology when contemplating the regulation and potential uses for AI technologies. Broadly, the association believes it is essential for there to be an all-of-government approach to governing new AI tools and their development. We encourage adequate coordination and cross-coordination across government and the involvement of psychologists who are well-versed in the research necessary to make the rollout and governance of these new technologies successful.
In the response, APA Services provided OMB with a set of policy recommendations (PDF, 142KB)opens in new window related to AI development, use, and regulation. These high-level principles are aimed at ensuring equity, safety, privacy, and health are adequately considered while not harming the continued development of AI technologies.
This effort is the continuation of APA Services’ commitment to informing the future of technology and regulations surrounding the field of AI.
