Working to Support American Indians and Alaska Natives

APA submitted written testimony to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for its July 8 hearing “Addressing the Urgent Needs of Our Tribal Communities.” The testimony explained the long-term health crisis this community has faced as is reflected in the high rates of suicide, especially for those between ages 15–24. APA’s testimony also addressed the disproportionate impact COVID-19 is having on American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and how the pandemic will only exacerbate the existing health crisis for this community. APA highlighted the basic resources that this community lacks, such as running water, and underscored the importance of reliable data on how COVID-19 is affecting the AI/AN communities. APA recommended that policy to help these communities address the need for basic resources and infrastructure, expand mental health resources and provide better access to data that can help slow the quickly spreading pandemic for American Indian and Alaska Natives.
