On April 13, Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) reintroduced the Immigrants’ Mental Health Act. Last year, APA worked closely with Napolitano’s office on the legislation and this year APA will seek to grow broader support for the legislation. The bill expands access to trauma-informed mental health care for immigrants and educates Customs and Border Protection agents working with immigrants. Also, the bill includes a provision to prohibit the sharing of information gathered during confidential psychotherapy sessions with child immigrants. See the legislation press release from Napolitano’s office.
