On November 15, 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) jointly announced a third extension of the current teleprescribing rulesopens in new window. This extension continues all of the current federal regulations around prescription of controlled substances via telehealth for another year and is set to expire on December 31, 2025. DEA and HHS cited the need for additional time for these departments to create a longer-term set of rules for teleprescribing, as well as the need to prevent unnecessary disruptions in care, as the primary motivations for this announcement. APA Services has worked alongside its coalition partners on letters to the Biden administration urging continuation of the current teleprescribing flexibilities. The association expects that the DEA and HHS will conduct further public outreach or announce new proposed rules concerning a longer-term regulatory framework for teleprescribing early in the new administration set to take office on January 20, 2025.
