Artificial Intelligence

virtual landscape of zeros and ones

Psychological science plays a role in understanding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), in helping policymakers think about objectives for regulating AI, and in guiding thinking about what types of AI should be encouraged for betterment of human society. AI is being built by humans and introduced into human systems. Therefore, a psychological understanding of humans should be central to decision-making about AI.

Our focus

  • Impact of AI on the field of psychology
New artificial intelligence tools will change the way that psychologists deliver care and assess patient needs. New technologies will introduce data privacy, safety, and transparency questions.
  • Role of psychological science in the development and deployment of AI
As the science of human behavior, psychological science has much to offer to ensure new AI tools are ethical, fair, well-researched, and effective.
I think AI is as much a cultural feature as it is technology. And I think we're trying to figure out as researchers, and as people who are subjected to these technologies, how is that going to change the world of work?
—Fred Oswald, PhD, Associate Editor, Journal of Applied Psychology
