Older Adults

APA Services advocates for the application of psychology to promote optimal health and independence in older adults through the development of appropriate services and supports, a competent geriatric workforce, and increased federal funding for aging research to address the challenges and opportunities presented by an aging society.

Our focus

  • Protect the mental and behavioral health care for the aging community.
  • Provide sufficient funding for elder justice and limit elder abuse.
  • Support family caregiving through programs that highlight those who care for the aging.
  • Highlight the importance of healthy aging and cognitive health.
  • Fund research to protect against ageism discrimination.
  • Remove any unnecessary burdens and obstacles, and expand access to evidence-based mental and behavioral health treatment for Medicare (the federal health insurance program for older adults) beneficiaries.
The unique position of psychologists provide us with the benefit of using psychological knowledge to benefit not just some people in society, but those populations that are routinely ignored.

What you can do

Health equity

APA works to advance health equity by supporting policies to reduce or eliminate disparities in health outcomes, as well as those that address underlying social determinants that affect the health and well-being of populations that have experienced economic and social marginalization.
