APA Minority Fellowship Program

Low income family receiving therapy through the support of the GPE program

Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), MFP provides funding for training, career development, and mentoring for mental and behavioral health professionals to work in underserved communities with limited access to services. Specifically, the program focuses on training students, postdoctoral fellows, and residents in culturally responsive mental and behavioral health care to address the needs of underserved communities.

Our focus

The Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is an innovative, comprehensive, and coordinated training, mentoring, and career development program that enhances psychological and behavioral outcomes of ethnic minority communities. MFP is committed to increasing the number of ethnic minority professionals in the field and advancing our understanding of the life experiences of ethnic minority communities. To this end, MFP provides financial support, professional development activities, and opportunities for professional and personal guidance.

MFP receives funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the APA advocacy team works to ensure this important program continues to receive federal financial support.

Our efforts on this issue advance the following advocacy priorities:

  • Psychology education and training financing
  • Psychology workforce development
