Promoting and Defending Research

Promoting and defending research

APA Services strongly encourages the use of psychological science in policy-making decisions and vigorously defends the field from ideological attacks.

Our focus

  • Provide insights from psychological science to federal research agencies
APA monitors and weighs in on federal agency policies related to research with human participants and nonhuman animals, as well as commenting on strategic plans and requests for information. With help from APA member experts, APA staff seek to represent the perspective of psychological scientists with federal agency staff.
  • Ensure psychologists may continue to conduct research with the most appropriate models, including nonhuman animal models
APA works with research leaders in the Committee on Animal Research Ethics and the membership at large to educate congressional offices about nonhuman animal research.
  • Promote sound research training policies and diversifying the scientific workforce
APA Services advocates for training programs that help psychological science respond to growing challenges such as diversifying the scientific workforce and adding value to interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Strengthen peer review systems and defend research from unfounded attack
APA vigorously supports scientific peer review systems against efforts to weaken or politicize them, and defends psychological science against unfounded attack. APA provides support to psychologists to help them prepare for and respond to damaging attacks by members of Congress and the media.

Our efforts on this issue advance the following advocacy priorities:
